The “Recommendation Guide for Translating Foreign Words into Turkish,” prepared by OSTİM Technical University and offering Turkish equivalents for foreign terms, was introduced to the public at a launch event held at the Nation’s Library of the Presidency. This guide, marking a significant step toward the simplification of the Turkish language in the fields of science and technology, attracted considerable interest from a diverse group of participants
The meeting was attended by Turkish politician and bureaucrat Ertan Yülek, Ankara University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Hatice Bakkaloğlu, TÜRKSOY Deputy Secretary General Sayit Yusuf, Journalists Association Ankara Board Member Kudret Doğandemir, as well as academics and students. In his speech, OSTİM Technical University Chancellor Prof. Dr. Murat Yülek emphasized the deep-rooted history of the Turkish language, stating that Turkish is a rich and capable language in the fields of science, industry, and technology, and that it can continue to develop without the need for foreign words
In his speech, Prof. Dr. Yülek stated: "Just as we have adopted lifestyles developed abroad along with advancements in science and technology, we have also imported foreign words into our language. This is the result of intellectual laziness. Our guide emphasizes the need for our language to return to its roots and embrace simplicity. Our aim is for future generations to internalize this rich language and carry it forward."
This guide, prepared by the Compilation Board composed of university academics after an extensive period of work, offers Turkish equivalents for foreign-origin terms frequently used in the fields of science and technology. It is designed to appeal to a broad audience, ranging from scientists to students, and from professionals in the business world to the general public. It was also noted that the guide, which is planned to be updated and expanded annually, will contribute significantly to efforts aimed at simplifying the language.
