Zakkum is a Turkish alternative rock band formed in Ankara in 1999 under the name Raindog. The band has performed nearly a thousand stage performances under the name Raindog, but during the album work they switched to a Turkish name and started to use the name "Zakkum".
The foundation of the band dates back to 1998. Cem Senyücel, Yusuf Demirkol and Eren Parlakgümüş continued their musical lives separately, but the idea of forming a band brought them together. Soon the foundations of the band were laid. The members of the band, who first took the stage at Sinema Bar, went through a constant change just like the many venues they played at. Emre Yılmaztürk was added to the current lineup in 2003.
Founded in the Glam, Brit-Pop Rock style, the band started to perform their own works as well as covers from bands such as Placebo, Radiohead, Morrissey, The Smiths, The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins and Suede in 2004. With the quartet of Yusuf Demirkol on vocals,Eren Parlakgümüş on electric guitar, Emre Yılmaztürk on bass guitar and Cem Senyücel on drums, the band entered 2005 with an album in the works and the goal was to release the album in early 2006 at the latest. Another important event for the band in 2005 was the launch of their program in Kadıköy, Istanbul. The band shuttled back and forth between Ankara and Istanbul, first postponing the planned album release to October 2006 and then to early 2007. In January 2007, their first album Zehr-i Zakkum was released.
